DEFINITION OF CLASS

This is entry level, general duty firefighting and rescue work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, emergency medical for the protection of life and property. Firefighting and rescue activities are performed under close supervision and in accordance with well-defined procedures. A substantial amount of duty time is directed toward inspecting and maintaining equipment, performing supervised training, and maintaining quarters. Assignments and work performed are received from departmental superiors in both firefighting and maintenance duties. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES PERFORMED

  • Responds to emergency alarms;
  • Forces entry of premises for firefighting, rescue and salvage operations;
  • Performs firefighting activities that may include driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks;
  • Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects;
  • Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs;
  • Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities;
  • As a Medical First Responder, responsibilities may include: gaining access to patients; providing appropriate and necessary care to incumbents level of training and transferring patient's care to more highly trained personnel;
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire department property, makes minute repairs, and otherwise maintains quarters;
  • Must possess and maintain physical strength and ability free of physical defects as determined reasonable in order to allow the effective execution of job responsibilities;
  • Interacts in a professional and respectful manner with all employee’s and public;
  • Must successfully complete annual physical ability test;
  • Responds to off-duty alarms when requested;
  • Demonstrates reliable attendance - must report to work as scheduled and on time.

OTHER DUTIES PERFORMED

  • Participates in fire drills and attends training classes in firefighting, hazardous materials, first-aid, and related subjects;
  • Performs general maintenance work in the up-keep of fire department property, cleans and washes walls and floors, makes minor repairs, washes and dries hose, paints, and otherwise maintains quarters;
  • Responsible for maintenance and cleaning of equipment;
  • Performs general maintenance on fire hydrants; trims weeds, paints, performs flow tests;
  • May perform minor mechanical duties;
  • Performs related work as assigned;
  • Serves as a member of various employee teams;

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from a standard four (4) year high school or equivalent and at least eighteen (18) years old;
  • 16hr and 64hr Basic Firefighting Class Certification within the first 6 months of employment.
  • ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 within first year of employment.
  • CPR Certification within first year of employment.
  • FFI Live Burn within first year of employment.
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness Certification within first year of employment.
  • Hazardous Materials Operations Certification within first year of employment.
  • Firefighter I Certification between the first and second year of employment.
  • Must maintain all required certifications.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the street system and physical layout of Alcoa;
  • Ability to learn firefighting methods, incident command system, and fire prevention techniques;
  • Ability to learn equipment operation and maintenance;
  • Ability to learn ladder usage;
  • Ability to learn salvage and overhaul operations;
  • Ability to learn firefighting safety practices;
  • Ability to learn First responder emergency medical procedures;
  • Ability to learn departmental rules and regulations;
  • Working ability of the proper operating procedures for fire department pumpers and aerial ladders;
  • Working ability to operate pump and related equipment in accordance with instructions from the superior officer;
  • Ability to drive fire apparatus safely and efficiently, while maintaining due regard to the safety of others;
  • Physical strength and ability and freedom from serious defects as indicated by a physical examination;
  • Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations;
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to effectively operate various information technology equipment;
