Definition of Class
This is skilled technical work in the maintenance and operation of substations. Work involves the ability to maintain, test, adjust, troubleshoot, and repair substation equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, electromechanical, solid state and microprocessor regulator control panels, indicating meters, recording instruments, regulators, transformers, and capacitors. The position will require the frequent use of computers to control, test, and program equipment, as well as the use of common and specialized tools and equipment needed for the job. The position will occasionally require working from ladders, structures and aerial bucket trucks to heights of approximately 50 feet. Employees in this class exercise no supervision and their work is supervised directly by an assigned Supervisor. This is a safety-sensitive position and will require periodic random and unannounced drug testing. |
Essential Duties Performed
100% -- Performs and/or oversees the testing and maintenance of substation apparatus, such as voltage regulators, regulator and LTC control panels, power circuit breakers and associated relaying, switches, fused disconnects, electrical bus, substation wiring and conduit, station service wiring and transformers, power transformers, fan controls and wiring, capacitor banks and controls, reclosers and controls, station batteries and chargers, motor operators, and associated equipment;
- Utilizes computers, proprietary software and communication mediums to communicate with electronic devices for programming and data collection;
- Perform or assist with analyzing data from electronic devices such as regulator panels and SCADA to determine proper operation of the equipment in service;
- Assist in generating and/or executing team-coordinated switching orders to isolate, transfer, and/or de-energize sections of the system for planned or unplanned repairs;
- Performs and logs quarterly / semi-annual visual inspections of all substations and system critical switching points;
- Assist with ordering and maintaining parts inventory of substation apparatus spare parts;
- Filter oil, perform oil screen testing, and analyze test results to determine issues with oil quality;
- Assist or perform the installation and/or removal of substation apparatus and/or facilities by operating heavy equipment and helping other equipment operators;
- Assist or perform power quality testing by operating electronic, electrical, video, and computerized test equipment;
- Coordinate with Dispatch, Engineering, and Line Crews all activities requiring their notification;
- Must report to work as scheduled and on time;
- Subject to call-in during outages and emergencies.
OTHER DUTIES PERFORMED- Assume responsibility for safe and proper operation of all vehicles and equipment assigned;
- Assist in keeping the Electric Department’s property neat, clean and in good general condition;
- Perform all work in accordance with established safety rules and in the most efficient and safe manner as possible, all the while fostering safe work practices and mindset;
- Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Education Requirements
- Graduation from a senior high school or GED diploma; and
- Five (5) years’ experience in either substation maintenance, electric line work, industrial electrical maintenance or other related experience;
- Associate degree in electrical engineering, construction, automation controls, or substation is preferred;
- Successful candidate must complete required training as directed by Supervisor.
- Possession of a valid appropriate commercial driver's license issued by the State of Tennessee.
