Definition of Class

This is skilled work at the journeyman level in one or more crafts such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, etc.  Depending on the employee’s skills & abilities, work in this class involves the in­stallation, fabrication, maintenance and/or servicing of electrical and electronic systems, water & wastewater systems, pumps, HVAC units, refrigerating & heating equipment, building & framing systems, welding & brazing, etc.  Employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of skilled tasks in accordance with standard trade practices.  Work extends to maintenance responsibility at a variety of City facilities.  Assignments are normally made orally or by written instructions.  However, employee in this class is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment in developing the specific work methods and procedures required for a particular assignment.  Work is inspected for compliance with instructions, although routine installations, repairs and maintenance work are usual­ly made without supervision or review.  Employee in this class may supervise subordinate maintenance assistants or laborers in the performance of a particular job.  General supervision is received from Maintenance Tech Leadworker or a Public Works division supervisor.  This is a safety-sensitive position.

Essential Duties Performed

ESSENTIAL DUTIES PERFORMED

  • Installs, fabricates, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates and/or services equipment & facilities associated with the employee’s trade(s) and craft(s);
  • Operates hand & power tools;
  • Operates measuring, testing, and analytical tools, gages, etc.; responsible for the execution of routine maintenance programs for pumps, drives, meters, and associated equipment common to the operation of the water treatment plant and water/wastewater pump stations;
  • Conducts and/or facilitates repair projects at water treatment plant, water/wastewater pumping stations, and other City facilities;
  • Works with and assists other maintenance & construction staff;
  • Prepares job estimates and materials lists;
  • In the absence of a Leadworker / Supervisor, may oversee work of subordinate employees;
  • Works overtime as required;
  • May be required to work standby on a rotating basis;
  • Subject to call-in for specified emergencies;
  • Reports to work as scheduled and on time, even under inclement weather conditions;
  • Operates automobiles, pickup trucks, bucket truck and other automotive equipment.

 

OTHER DUTIES PERFORMED

  • Assists construction crews as needed;
  • Performs related work as required;
  • Serves as a member of various employee teams.

 

ELECTRIC

ESSENTIAL DUTIES PERFORMED

  • Installs, maintains, calibrates and services electronic sampling, monitoring and metering equipment;
  • Installs, maintains and services motors, meters, control valves, air compressors and other major electrical equipment;
  • Maintains and services electrical and electronic components of water and wastewater pump stations and/or HVAC equipment;
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems and HVAC units common to public buildings (e.g., schools, etc.) and other large buildings;
  • Operates pipe cutters, reamers, threading machines, conduit benders, electrical test equipment, HVAC gauges, and other electrical tools and equipment;
  • Trouble-shoots mechanical and electrical equipment and performs maintenance on the same;
  • Installs, maintains, calibrates and services electronic / electrical equipment such as instrumentation, telemetry, SCADA, etc.;

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid electrician’s license issued by the State of Tennessee;

 

PLUMBING

ESSENTIAL DUTIES PERFORMED

  • Installs and maintains valves, pumps, drives, piping, meters and associated equipment common to the operation of the water treatment plant and water/wastewater pump stations;
  • Installs and repairs water pipes, sinks, toilet fixtures, automatic sprinklers and other plumbing fixtures common to schools and other large buildings;
  • Operates pipe cutters, reamers, threading machines, sewer taps and cables and other plumbing tools and equipment;
  • Responsible for the execution of routine maintenance programs for pumps, drives, meters, and associated equipment common to the operation of the water treatment plant and water/wastewater pump stations;
  • Trouble-shoots mechanical and electrical equipment and performs maintenance on the same.
  • Conducts repair projects at water treatment plant, water/wastewater pumping stations, and other City facilities;

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid plumber’s license issued by the State of Tennessee

 

Minimum Education Requirements

Either:

  • Graduation from a standard or vocational high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED); and
  • Three (3) years progressive experience in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, or other trade.

Or

  • Completion of recognized / accredited post-secondary vocational program in electrical or plumbing with possession of licensure.

    Or

  • Completion of twelve (12) months progressive experience as a Maintenance Technician Apprentice.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of certifications / licenses specified for one or more crafts (See Associated Crafts/Skills) in lieu of experience.
