The Alcoa Police Department (APD) is scheduled for an on-site assessment as part of a program to achieve reaccreditation by verifying the department meets professional standards. Chief Rob Sofie, who is now retired after 30 years of law enforcement service in the State of Washington, will be reviewing the APD during this assessment process.
Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards and best practices. CALEA is the international credentialing authority, based in the United States, whose primary mission is to accredit public safety agencies, namely law enforcement agencies. The Law Enforcement Accreditation process focuses on standards that provide best practices related to life, health, and safety procedures for the agency. These standards are considered foundational and provides the framework for addressing high risk issues within a contemporary environment, and ensures officers are prepared to meet basic community service expectations and are prepared to manage critical events. There are four basic areas that agencies are required to comply; Policy and Procedures, Administration, Operations, and Support Services.
As part of the department’s commitment to providing the best law enforcement services, members of the community are invited to offer comments via the Accreditation Public Comment portal, https://cimrs2.calea.org/45.
Anyone who wishes to submit written comments directly to the Commission on Law Enforcement Accreditation regarding the department’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation, may send them to:
