Message from the City Manager
On behalf of the administration team of the City of Alcoa, I would like to welcome you to the City’s website. I hope that you will find the information contained here both informative and helpful. Our site is under continuous development and our goal is to provide as many interactive services for our citizens and customers as possible such as the feature allowing customers the ability to view and pay utility bills online. As we continue to improve our site, your comments and suggestions are welcome.
The City of Alcoa is located in Blount County, Tennessee immediately south of Knoxville and Knox County. Over one-third of our county lies within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park - the most visited national park in the nation. In addition to the magnificent mountain vistas and recreational opportunities provided by the national park, numerous Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) lakes lie within a few minutes drive of the City of Alcoa and provide a boating and fishing paradise.
Alcoa operates under the council-manager form of government providing a full range of services including police, fire, public works, recreation, planning and code enforcement along with electric, water and sewer utilities to our 8,500 residents and our estimated 40,000 daily visitors. Our utility systems reach far beyond our city limits with our electric system supplying economical TVA power to over 26,000 customers. Our water system operates a $28,000,000 state-of-the-art membrane filtration water plant completed in 2007 that provides the water needs for numerous industries, commercial enterprises and 10,000 residential customers.
Since our founding in 1919 by the Aluminum Company of America, (Alcoa Inc.), as a residential community for its vast work force, Alcoa has evolved from a company town to a major residential and commercial center in the Knoxville metropolitan area. Although Alcoa Inc. still maintains a major presence in Alcoa, our national and international economic development and initiatives have revealed to other worldwide corporations the benefits of conducting their operations in our community. Among these are the headquarters of Clayton Homes, Inc. and ProNova. With both the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee just a few minutes away and the Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport located within our borders, the City of Alcoa is positioned strategically for embracing the new global economy.
Thanks for taking the time to visit our site and, if you need more information concerning our departments, services, livability, or economic development opportunities, please follow the links contained herein or email me.
Sincerely,
Mark L. Johnson
